Buffett declared that he would donate more than 80 percent to charitable foundations. In 2020, he increased the percentage to 99 percent. The principal beneficiary was the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, founded by Microsoft founder Bill Gates and his then wife Melinda, which was primarily concentrated on global issues such as education and health; Bill and Buffett were in close friendship since the early 1990s. The three Buffett children and the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation (named after his wife) were among the foundations that were the recipients of donations. They were concerned with women's reproductive rights, funded scholarships for college students, and also various other charitable organizations. The Giving Pledge was an invitation for wealthy individuals to donate a significant portion of their assets to charities established by Buffett and Gates in 2010.
